Colorado cannabis consumers could soon carry concealed weapons

A gun-rights organization called Guns for Everyone is working on a ballot initiative in Colorado that would allow marijuana users to obtain concealed carry permits for guns. The proposal went before the state’s Legislative Council Staff in December 2023. The organization argues that marijuana users should have the same rights as alcohol users to defend themselves. Currently, Colorado law prohibits sheriffs from issuing permits to individuals who are not eligible under federal law, which includes marijuana users.

The proposed initiative aims to change this by stating that a sheriff cannot use a permit applicant’s lawful use of marijuana as a reason to deny them a permit. If the initiative’s wording is deemed clear and reasonable, it will be accepted and titled by the Secretary of State’s office.

Guns for Everyone will then need to gather 125,000 signatures in six months in order to place the initiative on the ballot. The organization wants marijuana users to be treated equally in terms of gun ownership and permits, similar to alcohol users who can legally purchase guns, but cannot possess firearms while under the influence
