Stick it Where? Cannabis Suppositories

Cannabis suppositories offer relief and comfort.

As a cannabis writer living in Humboldt, CA, I don’t shy away from trying new things. CBD eye cream? Sure! Sea salt caramels with a micro-dose of THC? Obviously!

So when it came time to try cannabis suppositories, I didn’t blink. A firm believer in the power of plants, I’ve made my own infused lubricant (make sure the oils are compatible with your birth control) and agree that every chance to swap out synthetic for natural is worth taking.

But break up with my Midol? Never.

Nearly every woman has traumatic memories of menstrual pain or a host of yucky symptoms, including headaches, nausea, diarrhea, fatigue, and depression. But what if there was a holistic solution?

Kiskanu, a plant-based skincare company in Eureka, California, has developed its suppositories for anal or vaginal usage. Each yellow torpido-shaped package is packed with coconut and calendula oil, along with 60 milligrams of THC and 15 milligrams of CBD. Typically, that’s way over my nut, but CEO Gretchen Miller explained that cannabinoids would be absorbed directly by the pelvic region’s many blood vessels.

One afternoon, I found myself at home with a few hours to myself. Though not menstruating, I had some cramping and was eager to try the suppositories out. Following Miller’s tips, I popped the suppository in the fridge for 15 minutes and made myself a comfy nest on the sofa.

Though I didn’t need it, I kept a hand towel nearby for leaks along with a big mug of herbal tea and a good book. (Chilling out is the point). After inserting the suppository, I set a pillow under my bum and relaxed. It was nice! Though I might have gotten a touch high, it was only the kind of garden-variety mood elevation that comes from carving out time for self-care.

The following week, my cycle inevitably arrived, so I used Kiskanu’s suppository as a medical application to dial down the cramps, digestive woes, and general fatigue. Again, I didn’t feel significantly altered, but it helped take the edge and I felt more at ease in my body. By Day 2, I was in enough discomfort to pop a Midol, but coupling pharmaceutical and holistic therapies felt empowering.

I recommend everyone try new products for themselves, as with all cannabis therapies, to see how their own unique bodies react. It’s exciting to see innovative holistic women’s health therapies emerge, but also important to remember that relaxation and emotional support are equally important factors in overall wellness. I plan to continue using vaginal cannabis suppositories as regular care to keep my vagina healthy and well loved all month, regardless of the moon.
