Massachusetts voters contemplate legalization of psychedelics. Excitement is brewing in Massachusetts as supporters of psychedelic treatments gather signatures for a ballot question in 2024, aiming to legalize the use of “magic mushrooms.”
To secure a place on the ballot, campaigners for the Massachusetts for Mental Health Options initiative had to collect 74,000 signatures from registered voters. Impressively, they managed to submit more than 95,000 signatures for certification, drawing attention to the growing interest in alternative therapies for mental health.
It could take officials several weeks to verify all of the signatures submitted. The measure would create a regulatory framework for lawful and supervised access to psychedelics at licensed facilities. It would also legalize the possession and gifting of psychedelics, such as psilocybin and ayahuasca, but it would not otherwise provide for commercial retail sales of the substances.
